What this week shows
Extra virgin olive oil was registered at three different levels on three exchanges: 307.60 in Aydın, 254.33 in Edremit and 201.09 TRY/kg in Nazilli. The 106-lira spread is a reminder that there is no single "Turkish price", and the trade dates differ as well.
On the shelf, extra virgin averages 454.62 TRY per litre across seven chains. Converting the exchange average to litres (olive oil density 0.916 kg/L) gives 233 TRY per litre. The shopper therefore pays roughly twice what the producer receives; the gap covers milling, bottling, distribution and retail margin.
The spread within retail is wider still: the cheapest litre is 249 TRY, the dearest 1,185.80 — a 4.8-fold range under the same product name.
All four European countries tracked here fell week on week. At the current rate (1 EUR = 55.95 TRY), Spain's producer price of 3.50 EUR/kg works out at 196 TRY/kg, below the Turkish exchange average. The two figures do not measure the same thing, however: the European data is a weekly average producer price, the Turkish data individual registered trades. It indicates direction, not a directly comparable level.
What stands out this week
Extra virgin fell 15% in a week in Edremit. Registered at ₺300.00/kg in last week's bulletin, extra virgin came in at ₺254.33/kg this week (trade of 25 August). No new trade was registered in Aydın or Nazilli, so those rows are unchanged at ₺307.60 and ₺201.09/kg. The decline therefore belongs to one new trade on one exchange, not to the country as a whole.
Domestic prices sit well above the European reference. The Spanish extra virgin producer price was €3.50/kg; at this week's rate (₺55.9498) that is ₺195.8/kg. Nazilli's ₺201.09 is only 2.7% above it, but Aydın's ₺307.60 is 57% above. Much of that gap is explained by the Aydın figure coming from a single trade two weeks earlier — yet domestic registrations clearly run above the international reference.
Shelf and exchange are almost a factor of two apart. The supermarket average for extra virgin was ₺454.62/L. Converting the exchange figure of ₺254.33/kg to litres (oil density is about 0.916 kg/L) gives roughly ₺233/L — so the price nearly doubles on the way to the shelf. The difference covers milling, bottling, distribution and retail margin.
In Europe, Croatia's 31.9% drop is the sharpest move in the table; Spain, Italy and Portugal all eased slightly, within a band of 1.5%.
A note on comparison
The Turkish and European figures are not directly comparable: the European data is a weekly average producer price, the Turkish data the price of individual registered trades. Anyone comparing them must also account for the exchange rate and the difference in dates.
