A limited presence on basalt soil
Olive production in Diyarbakır is extremely small. The province's agricultural identity is tied to watermelon, wheat and livestock; the olive sits at the edge of that picture.
The reason is climatic: the Diyarbakır basin is among Turkey's hottest in summer and the Southeast's coldest in winter. Under this double-ended regime the olive holds on only in sheltered spots.
The province lies between the Gaziantep-Kilis line, the Southeast's olive centre, and the Mardin-Şırnak genotype basin; the two traditions do not meet in Diyarbakır — they thin out.
