Olive growing in Artvin

In the 2024-25 season Artvin harvested 740 tonnes of olives from 23.000 bearing trees — an average of 31.8 kg per tree. Of that crop 467 t went to the table and 274 t to pressing, yielding 55 tonnes of olive oil.

Çoruh's award-winning olive: Butko
Artvin is the most striking case of Black Sea olive growing, and it owes that to a single variety: Butko. It grows in the province's Yusufeli district, in the microclimate of the Çoruh Valley.
Butko oil won the Superior Taste Award at the International Olive Oil Fair in Beijing in 2006, on the strength of its very low acidity. The variety is currently in the geographical indication registration process.
The physical look of the groves is distinctive too: roughly 25,000 trees on 880 decares, with tree heights of 8-12 metres — growers harvest from ladders. This is a traditional picture, entirely unlike the low-crowned trees of the coast. The centuries-old trees protected across generations are counted as part of the province's cultural heritage.
Beyond Butko, the genotypes Otur, Satı and Görvele are also recorded in Artvin.
