Home to three local varieties
Trabzon's olive output is very small, yet the province has varieties bearing its own name: İstrangili, Marantelli and Trabzon Yağlık. Pastos, which it shares with Zonguldak, also grows here.
Along the Black Sea, olive growing is confined to narrow coastal strips and valleys sheltered from northerly winds with a Mediterranean microclimate, and is largely table production for household consumption. Trabzon falls squarely within that description.
The province matters not for its tonnage but for its genetic diversity: these local varieties, left outside commercial olive growing, form the little-known wing of the national variety pool.
