Where olives grow in Çanakkale
In Çanakkale olives are grown in Ezine, Ayvacık, Biga, Eceabat and Gelibolu, and on Bozcaada and Gökçeada. Ezine and Ayvacık form the northern end of the oil-olive belt around the Gulf of Edremit, planted mainly with the Edremit (Ayvalık) variety.
On the islands and the Gelibolu peninsula, olive growing is carried on alongside other crops.
What the figures say
Çanakkale's standout figure is yield: 33.1 kg per tree, the highest of the six. Manisa manages 25.0 kg and Aydın 21.0 — Çanakkale beats both, and with only 5.2 million bearing trees.
It is also the most oil-oriented of the six: only 6% of the crop goes to table use. Its extraction rate of 5.6 is the second best after Muğla.
Tree numbers rose 6.0% over eleven years — measured growth. Çanakkale stands out less for expanding its orchards than for what it gets out of the trees it has.
