Where it stands

An exception inside the tea belt

Rize is Turkey's wettest and most tea-dominated province; it is not an expected address for olives. What olive presence exists is confined to a few trees in sheltered, relatively sunny pockets of the coast.

Rize's place on the olive map is a definition of a limit: the olive is drought-tolerant, but under persistently humid, overcast conditions fruit set and oil accumulation weaken. In that sense the province is the unfavourable extreme.

Even so, the tree's presence shows that the thin olive line along the Black Sea runs unbroken to the Georgian border — and that line's most developed point is Artvin.
