This bulletin brings together current prices from four open sources: trades registered at Turkish commodity exchanges (TOBB), retail prices on Turkish supermarket shelves, weekly producer prices in Europe (European Commission) and exchange rates (European Central Bank). The figures below are those available when the bulletin was prepared.

What stands out this week

Edremit's extra virgin registration rose and the gap to Spain widened again. The Edremit extra virgin line moved from 270.00 ₺/kg in the 22 October registration to 304.73 ₺/kg in the 26 October one (+12.9%). The bulletin shows only the latest registration; there may have been other trades on the days in between. Over the same period the producer price for extra virgin went from 3.26 to 3.24 €/kg in Spain, from 3.52 to 3.55 €/kg in Portugal and from 4.75 to 4.78 €/kg in Italy; all three moved by less than one per cent. The euro gained 0.2% against the lira (55.67 → 55.80 ₺). The lira value of the Spanish price is about 180.8 ₺/kg; the Edremit registration, 49% above that reference last week, is now 68.5% above it. The lira value of the Italian price is about 266.7 ₺/kg; last week it was only 2% below the Edremit registration, now it is 14.2% below. The Edremit line is the price of a single trade on that day, while the European figures are weekly averages.

Oil olives and crude oil moved in opposite directions. In Edremit, olives for oil fell from 31.31 ₺/kg on 12 October to 21.12 ₺/kg on 27 October (−32.5%). Over the same days crude olive oil in Nazilli rose from 200.00 ₺/kg on 21 October to 232.88 ₺/kg on 27 October (+16.4%). More than two weeks separate the two registrations in the oil-olive line, and as the harvest advances the oil yield and quality of the lots reaching the exchange change; part of the fall may reflect that difference. The other exchange lines in the bulletin carry the same registration dates as last week, meaning no new trades.

The supermarket basket grew, so read the averages with that in mind. The number of supermarkets, down by one for all five products last week, rose by one this week: from 6 to 7 for extra virgin oil and green table olives, from 5 to 6 for riviera and from 3 to 4 for olive paste. The extra virgin average rose from 418.62 to 449.19 ₺/L (+7.3%), but the cheapest shelf price is still 249.00 ₺/L; the increase may come largely from the top price rising from 879.90 to 1,239.90 ₺/L, that is, from a premium product entering the list. Olive paste shows the same pattern: its average rose 27.0% and its top price went from 1,073.16 to 1,944.17 ₺/kg. The riviera (−4.7%) and green table olive (−3.2%) averages fell, with the cheapest and most expensive prices unchanged for both. Black table olives, the only product whose supermarket count stayed the same, saw the average rise from 363.25 to 398.01 ₺/kg (+9.6%), while the end prices (99.50 and 686.25 ₺/kg) did not move.

A note on comparison

The Turkish and European figures are not directly comparable: the European data is a weekly average producer price, the Turkish data the price of individual registered trades. Anyone comparing them must also account for the exchange rate and the difference in dates.
