This bulletin brings together current olive oil prices from three open sources: trades registered at Turkish commodity exchanges (TOBB), weekly producer prices in Europe (European Commission) and exchange rates (European Central Bank). The figures below are those available when the bulletin was prepared.

What this week shows

Extra virgin olive oil was registered at three different levels on three exchanges: 307.60 in Aydın, 254.33 in Edremit and 201.09 TRY/kg in Nazilli. The 106-lira spread is a reminder that there is no single "Turkish price", and the trade dates differ as well.

On the shelf, extra virgin averages 454.62 TRY per litre across seven chains. Converting the exchange average to litres (olive oil density 0.916 kg/L) gives 233 TRY per litre. The shopper therefore pays roughly twice what the producer receives; the gap covers milling, bottling, distribution and retail margin.

The spread within retail is wider still: the cheapest litre is 249 TRY, the dearest 1,185.80 — a 4.8-fold range under the same product name.

All four European countries tracked here fell week on week. At the current rate (1 EUR = 55.95 TRY), Spain's producer price of 3.50 EUR/kg works out at 196 TRY/kg, below the Turkish exchange average. The two figures do not measure the same thing, however: the European data is a weekly average producer price, the Turkish data individual registered trades. It indicates direction, not a directly comparable level.

A note on comparison

The Turkish and European figures are not directly comparable: the European data is a weekly average producer price, the Turkish data the price of individual registered trades. Anyone comparing them must also account for the exchange rate and the difference in dates.
