The homeland of Karamürsel Su
Kocaeli's place in olive growing comes not from the size of its output but from being the homeland of a variety: Karamürsel Su originates in the province's Karamürsel district, where it is also known as su zeytini (water olive).
Olives are grown around Gölcük and Karamürsel, alongside other crops. Samanlı and Çelebi are also recorded here.
⚠ In parts of Marmara exposed to northerly winds the trees suffer cold damage in some years, and Kocaeli sits in that belt. The olive's chilling requirement become decisive here.
