Where it stands

The northern tip of Thrace

Edirne is the northwestern boundary of Turkey's olive map. Olive presence here is symbolic; there is no commercial production.

Thrace's olive centre is Tekirdağ, and even there production is limited to a narrow belt along the Marmara shore. Edirne lies north of that belt, where the sea's influence recedes.

Winter cold is the deciding factor: the region is open to northerly winds and in some years falling temperatures cause cold damage. That risk keeps the olive at garden scale in Edirne.
