Where it stands

The olive limit of inland Marmara

Bilecik sits at the olive's inland Marmara limit. As the climate turns continental away from the sea, the olive survives only in suitable microclimates.

The province's output is small and almost entirely destined for the table — sharing Marmara's table-oriented character. The region's principal variety, Gemlik, is widespread here too.

Bilecik shows how a crop behaves at its geographic edge: the area narrows, yields fall, but production does not stop altogether.
